Using surplus metal stencils collected from a historic lighting factory in my home borough of Queens, I am working on a series of cyanotype and c-print photograms. I use these found patterns to invite reflection on the changing landscape and the layers of history and culture present in the rapidly gentrifying neighborhood of Long Island City. The metal materials from a family-owned lighting company provide a link between the manufacturing sector and the influx of new construction and businesses in the borough; the industrial shapes are reminiscent of textile patterns from a world of cultures, calling to mind the rich history and diversity of Queens communities. These prints will be exhibited in the gallery and showroom of the factory, Edison Price Lighting. This work is funded (in part) by the Queens Council on the Arts with public funds from the New York City Department of Cultural Affairs in partnership with the City Council.
